School Advisory Council

What is a School Advisory Council?

The School Advisory Council (SAC) is composed of the principal and a balanced number of teachers, other school staff members, students, and parents, along with business and community people, who are representative of the ethnic, racial, and economic community served by the school so that all groups of the school community have a voice in school improvement. They are either elected or appointed to form the SAC for the school.

  • The parents are nominated and elections are held at the beginning of each year to determine the members.

  • This committee meets once a month to discuss issues such as school improvement, school goals and the school budget.

  • The SAC is the school community voice in the planning process for school improvement.

  • The goal in the school improvement plan is that all students will learn and achieve in the areas of math, reading and writing.

  • Student growth on standardized tests will determine the effect that the school improvement plan has had on the academic growth of our students.

  • The SAC membership must reflect the racial/economic makeup of the school's population.

  • The majority -- at least 51 percent -- of the SAC members must be nonschool employees.

  • Parents: We need your help! Please join our SAC committee and help our students succeed.

What is the purpose of the School Advisory Council?

The SAC represents the school community as the means for school improvement. The SAC's primary role is to assist the principal in developing and evaluating the school improvement plan (SIP) in order to help students achieve success. In addition, the SAC advises the principal in the preparation of the school's budget. The efforts of the SAC are always focused on improving student achievement.

How can I become a part of SAC?

  • Please contact the principal, assistant principal, or SAC chair to indicate your interest in being a part of the committee. New members are welcome to join in the fall, but by the November meeting, the SAC roster is form based on the set criteria. However, attendance is required at all subsequent monthly meetings and a quorum is needed for voting and approving the budget. So please remain committed to helping improve Robinswood Middle School throughout the year.

  • Meetings are currently held in the cafeteria on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:00 PM, immediately following the PTSA meeting. SAC begins (and PTSA ends) with the principal's report to both groups.

School Improvement Plan

The first task in the school improvement process is the formation of the SAC in the early fall followed by the development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). The most critical element of the planning process include developing the plan, implementing the plan, and evaluating the plan

The specific steps for the development of a strategic SIP include the following:

  • Create a vision for Robinswood Middle School

  • Conduct a needs assessment

  • Develop 5-year objectives based on the OCPS vision and mission

  • Determine annual objectives and select supporting conditions

  • Create action plans

  • Complete the final version of the plan

  • Share the school improvement plan

  • Gain approval of the plan
